4 Best Vegan Purple Shampoo: Say Bye To Brassy Hair In 2024

Purple shampoo is just what it sounds like – purple-tinted shampoo. While some people use purple shampoo to maintain their dyed purple hair and keep it looking vibrant, purple shampoo has other uses as well.

In fact, the most common reason why purple shampoo is used is to help maintain blonde hair. Whether your hair is dyed blonde or you’re a natural blonde, purple shampoo can help maintain the beautiful natural blonde sheen of your hair by removing unsightly brassiness.

Most of the purple shampoo on the market is safe and easy to use. However, not all purple shampoo is vegan. Some shampoos may contain animal by-products or may have been developed with animal testing.

In today’s post, I’m going to start by answering some of the most commonly asked questions about purple shampoo and show you the best vegan purple shampoo that I’ve been using!

Is Purple Shampoo Vegan?

I would say that most of the purple shampoo on the market is vegan. Purple shampoo, by nature, is a fairly simple product and doesn’t have quite as many features as your everyday shampoo. It usually just consists of some basic detergents as well as a small amount of purple tint.

Some purple shampoo may contain some added moisturizers, but this isn’t very common.

The reason purple shampoo is simple is that it’s not meant to be used as an everyday shampoo.

Most people don’t use purple shampoo more than once or twice a week and it’s mostly seen as a supplement to a full-bodied shampoo. Your everyday shampoo will typically have more moisturizing ingredients, protein, and added fragrances.

Is Fanola Purple Shampoo Vegan?

Is Fanola Purple Shampoo Vegan

Fanola is one of the most sought-after purple shampoos on the market. It’s used by influencers, cosmetologists, hairdressers, and more, so it’s a well-known brand.

Thankfully, Fanola Purple Shampoo is vegan!

In fact, it’s also one of my favorite vegan purple shampoos. I’ve written a full review of the product below if you’re interested in learning more about the product and the brand.

Is Pravana Purple Shampoo Vegan?

Is Pravana Purple Shampoo Vegan

Pravana is another highly reputable brand that makes purple shampoo. Pravana Purple Shampoo is also 100% vegan. So you can use it as often as you’d like! Overall, it’s very similar to Fanola Purple Shampoo, and there are very few differences.

If you’d like to compare and contrast the two competing brands of vegan purple shampoo, I’ve also written a brief review below, so you can decide which one is best for you and your hair!

Non-Vegan Ingredients To Look Out For In Purple Shampoo

Common Non-Vegan Ingredients In Purple ShampooWhy They’re Not Vegan
CaseinCasein isn’t very common in shampoos, but you may find it in purple shampoo + conditioner packs.  Casein is a milk protein that’s produced alongside whey protein during the cheese-making process.  As a direct dairy product, casein is not vegan.
GelatinIf you’ve ever used a shampoo, conditioner, or hair product that had a thick, globulous texture similar to Jell-O, then there’s a good chance that it contained gelatin.  Gelatin is an animal by-product that comes from the fatty tissue, ligaments, and joints of animals, so it’s not vegan.
LanolinLanolin is a protein that’s derived from sheep’s wool and is often used in mainstream shampoos and conditioners.  Unfortunately, wool is not vegan as it’s a by-product of an industry that supports animal cruelty.
KeratinKeratin is a natural protein that’s found in the skin and hair of many mammals. It keeps hair strong and thick.  Unfortunately, most of the keratin used in mainstream products is derived from animal bones, skin, and fur
Honey and/or Bee ProductsWhile some vegans may consume honey, almost all vegans abstain from commercially farmed honey. Commercial bee farming is cruel and often harmful for bee colonies.

Can You Use Vegan Purple Shampoo For Gray Hair?

Can You Use Vegan Purple Shampoo For Gray Hair

If you have naturally gray hair, purple shampoo is one of the simplest (and best) treatments that you can do to improve the natural appearance of your hair.

As we begin to age, our hair produces less melanin, the chemical responsible for our natural hair color. As a result, our hair gradually becomes gray.

The vegan purple shampoo also works wonderfully on dyed gray or silver hair!

When you add purple-tinted shampoo to your gray hair, the purple deposits counteract the dull, brassy tones. Instead, they bring out the cool blues and darker hues of your gray hair, creating more depth and complexity.

Is There Any Reason Why You Shouldn’t Use Purple Shampoo?

Is Purple Shampoo Vegan

Nope! Purple shampoo is great for virtually any natural hair color. Purple shampoo isn’t dark enough to dye your hair, so you’ll never have to worry about it changing the color of your hair.

All it does is tone down yellow, orange, and brass tones while bringing out cool colors and enhancing the natural dark tones of your hair.

That being said, you shouldn’t use purple shampoo too often

Purple shampoo often has some drying ingredients in it and it’s not as healthy for your hair as a high-quality vegan shampoo made for everyday use.

If you use it too much, it can cause your hair to become dry-looking and may cause itchiness and dryness on your scalp.

It’s important that you use purple shampoo the right way. Otherwise, you could really mess up your hair.

Here’s a full breakdown of what purple shampoo does to your hair and how to get the best results:

The Best Vegan Purple Shampoo For 2024

Alright, so now that you know a little bit more about what to expect from a vegan purple shampoo, it’s time to show you some of my personal favorites. Although I’m not blonde, I am a natural light brunette. Currently, my hair is dyed a deep shade of burgundy.

Of course, my hair looks amazing right after I dye it. After a few weeks of heavy sun exposure or a day at the pool, though, the red tones can start to look a bit like copper.

A quick treatment with vegan purple shampoo is all it takes to remove this unwanted brassiness and restore the deep red tones!

Trust me guys, this stuff really works. If you dye your hair or have natural blonde or gray-colored hair, then purple shampoo can dramatically improve your hair’s appearance. Here are the best vegan purple shampoos that are cruelty-free and free from animal by-products.

Effectiveness: Very Effective

Fanola is an Italian company that makes high-quality hair shampoos, conditioners, and styling products. Fanola Free No Yellow Vegan Shampoo is, by far, one of the best purple shampoos that I’ve ever used.

In fact, it was the first purple shampoo I ever used after my hairdresser recommended it to me after dying my hair a couple of years ago.

Unfortunately, I moved to a different city and couldn’t find the Fanola Purple Shampoo, so I forgot about it for a while. With Amazon, though, you can order it online straight to your doorstep. I recently just stocked up on another bottle!

Unlike some of the other purple shampoos that I’ve tried over the years, Fanola Vegan Purple Shampoo isn’t very drying. It has a balanced pH that rests between 5.0 and 5.5, making it perfect for hair. It won’t strip out old dye or damage your hair and leave it dry and broken.

In fact, Fanola Purple Shampoo does the opposite. It’s one of the only purple shampoos that I’ve used that leaves my hair feeling soft and somewhat moisturized after use!

The only downside of this product is that it is rather expensive. Compared to the rest of the vegan purple shampoos I’ve used in the past, Fanola is easily the most costly.

This is fine if you’re only planning to use it a couple of times per month, but if you plan on using it more frequently then you may want to consider one of the more cost-effective options.

What I Like About It:

  • Made in Italy and designed for professional salon use.
  • 100% vegan and cruelty-free.
  • Leaves hair feeling soft and silky-smooth after use.
  • Contains a deep violet tint.
  • A little bit goes a long way.

What’s Not-So-Great About It:

  • It’s very expensive.
  • It’s hard to find in stores, so Amazon is your only option.

2) Pravana Perfect Blonde Purple Toning Shampoo & Conditioner Kit (link)

Effectiveness: Very effective

If you’re looking for a vegan purple shampoo that’s a little bit more affordable and gives you more bang for your buck, Pravana “Perfect Blonde” Purple Toning Shampoo + Conditioner Kit is a perfect choice. Unlike Fanola, you’ll get enough to last you for several months.

You’ll also get an entire bottle of vegan-friendly conditioner thrown in the bundle as well.

Pravana Purple Shampoo + Conditioner come in large, one-liter containers and feature hand pumps, which makes dispensing the shampoo simple and easy.

This also keeps you from accidentally using too much at one time, which is easy to do if you have a standard squirt-top.

Pravana Purple Shampoo isn’t quite as dark purple and concentrated as Fanola, which means you may need to use it a little bit more. That being said, the cost difference more than accounts for this, in my opinion.

The shampoo contains both soy protein and coconut oil. This means that the shampoo is gentler on your hair and reduces any breaking or split ends that you’d otherwise have after repeated use of a low-quality purple shampoo. It also leaves it feeling soft and smooth afterward!

Another benefit of the added moisturizers is that it doesn’t dry your hands out.

Next, you have the Pravana Purple Conditioner. Before buying this kit, I had no idea that purple conditioners even existed. Instead, I would just pair my everyday vegan conditioner with the purple shampoo.

I have to say that the Pravana Purple Conditioner really does make a difference. I’ve found that using a regular untinted conditioner after purple shampoo can remove some of the purple tints.

By combining the purple shampoo with the purple conditioner, you ensure that the most amount of purple tint gets deposited in your hair, allowing you to see the biggest difference.

What I Like About It:

  • Great deal, comes with a large amount.
  • Features a bundled purple-tinted conditioner as well.
  • Includes easy-to-use hand pumps.
  • 100% vegan and cruelty-free.
  • Made with soy protein and coconut oil for added moisturization.

What’s Not-So-Great About It:

  • The purple tint isn’t quite as dark as Fanola Purple Shampoo.

Effectiveness: Effective

Redken is a go-to brand when it comes to home styling, hair dye, and hair maintenance products. Redken Color Extend Purple Shampoo is one of the highest-rated purple shampoos on Amazon.

It also won the 2019 award by Allure Beauty for “The best shampoo for color-treated hair.”

So, Redken Color Purple Shampoo is approved by the masses and has even received a prestigious award. You’d expect a product like this to be pretty expensive, right? Well, think again. This purple shampoo is one of the most cost-effective options on the market as well.

Redken Purple Shampoo is also Climate Pledge-Friendly. This means that the company regularly records and reports its factory emissions and is making an active effort to reduce its carbon footprint through innovation and responsibility.

I used this product for several months after receiving a promotion that made it even more affordable. While it wasn’t quite as powerful as the Fanola Purple Shampoo, it was pretty close (and half the cost). It has a violent tint that makes it great for dyed blonde hair or dirty blonde hair.

In addition to the violet tint, the shampoo contains salicylic acid, which maintains your hair’s root strength. It also features added wheat protein, which is designed to provide added strength to the outer layers of your hair.

The conditioner works excellent as well and leaves your hair feeling soft, voluminous, and hydrated. It contains the same pure violet tint ensuring that you don’t lose any purple deposits between rinses.

What I Like About It:

  • Made by Redken, a leader in home hair styling.
  • Bundled with a violet-tinted conditioner.
  • Contains salicylic acid to strengthen your roots.
  • Contains wheat protein to strengthen outer layers of hair.

What’s Not-So-Great About It:

  • The purple tint isn’t quite as strong as Fanola, so you’ll need to use a little bit more.
  • No hand pumps included.

Effectiveness: Very Effective

ColorProof Signature Blonde Violet Shampoo is, by far, one of the highest-quality vegan purple shampoos that I’ve ever used. In addition to the pure violet tint, it’s made with a number of high-quality, all-natural ingredients designed to improve the overall health and quality of your hair and scalp.

It’s certified vegan and is free from keratin, parabens, gluten, mineral oil, sulfates, salt, phthalates, and known carcinogens (which is a BIG one). Plus, it’s 100% free from gluten and wheat protein, so you don’t have to worry about any unexpected allergic reactions.

Some of the most notable natural ingredients include chamomile flower oil and safflower oil, which hydrate the hair and have an anti-inflammatory effect on the scalp. This can counteract any irritation that the purple tint may cause your scalp.

ColorProof backs their product with a rather lofty claim as well: “Delivers 96% color retention after ten washes.”

This is made possible by their patented Advanced ColorLast System.

This special formula includes chromoveil and heliogenol for color protection, FlexShield tech to protect your hair from heat damage, vegan protein to strengthen your hair, and a blend of interesting botanicals designed to balance your hair’s pH level and nourish the roots.

ColorProof Signature Blonde Purple Shampoo is on the more expensive side and is eclipsed only by Fanola Purple Shampoo. However, of the two, I far prefer this one because of natural ingredients and additives.

What I Like About It:

  • Completely free from parabens, phthalates, sulfites, and other nasty chemicals.
  • Cruelty-free and vegan.
  • Contains added safflower and chamomile flower oils.
  • Contains a botanical blend to nourish your scalp.
  • Features ColorProof’s patented ColorLast System which protects your hair and keeps your dyed hair healthier for longer.

What’s Not-So-Great About It:

  • It’s pretty expensive.

How Often Should You Use Vegan Purple Shampoo?

How Often Should You Use Vegan Purple Shampoo

Although some labels suggest daily use, you shouldn’t follow this. Most professional hairstylists only recommend using a vegan purple shampoo once weekly. Any more is overkill and can damage your hair as well as waste an expensive product.

How Long Should You Let Vegan Purple Shampoo Sit?

After applying the vegan purple shampoo to your hair, you should let it sit for between two and three minutes. This should be more than enough to take care of minor brassiness, yellowness, or fading in your hair.

Conclusion – What’s The Best Vegan Purple Shampoo?

Of all the vegan purple shampoos, I would say that the best (and my personal favorite) is the ColorProof Signature Blonde Violet Shampoo. I like the natural ingredients, herbal extracts, and appreciate the fact that the company is committed to making 100% vegan products.

It may be a bit expensive, but if you only use it once weekly, it’ll last you for quite a while.
