Is Too Faced Cruelty-Free? (Hint: Get Your Shopping List Ready!)

The company may not be as old as many other leading cosmetic brands, but it has rattled the industry with its distinctive approach and unique products (it gave us glitter eyeshadows) from the very beginning.

But, is the brand conscious of its processes? Are Too Faced products cruelty-free?

Known for its playful packaging, effective formulas, and unique product names, Too Faced Cosmetics has been in the cosmetic industry for over 20 years.

Is Too Faced Cruelty-Free?

Good news for all the makeup junkies out there who’re almost always on the hunt for cosmetics brands that do not test on animals – Too Faced is cruelty-free!

Too Faced does not test its ingredients or finished products on animals. It also doesn’t work with any supplier or third-part that performs animal testing (you can tell that they take it very seriously).

What is the Animal Testing Policy of Too Faced?

Unlike most other cruelty-free brands, Too-Faced doesn’t provide an explicit explanation of their cruelty-free policy, their stance on animal testing, or how do they ensure compliance with their cruelty-free policy.

However, the company proudly displays the cruelty-free sign on its website…

Here’s what all the company says on its website about animal testing, in response to the question – Does Too Faced test on animals?

The company’s love for animals can also be determined from the fact that they do not just not test on animals, but also work with Best Friends Animal Society to help homeless pets find loving and caring parents.

Too Faced has also been a part of PETA’s cruelty-free program Beauty without Bunnies since 2001.

Is All Too Faced Makeup Cruelty-Free?

Yes, all Too Faced makeup products are 100% cruelty-free.

Does Too Faced Sell in China?

Too Faced is highly committed to playing its part in ending animal cruelty. It can be determined from the fact that the company does not sell its products anywhere where animal testing is mandatory. For this very reason, Too Faced does not sell in mainland China.

Did Too Faced Ever Test On Animals?

Too Faced has always been against animal testing. Being cruelty-free is one of the company’s founding principles and it has remained true to its commitment till date.

The company’s description on Twitter also states the fact…

Is all Too Faced makeup cruelty-free

Does Too Faced Parent Company Test on Animals?

For a significantly large number of people dedicated to eliminating animal testing, a company is truly cruelty-free only when both the brand and its parent company avoids animal testing. This is why when it comes to evaluating the cruelty-free status of a brand, many people consider the animal testing policy of its parent company as well.

Too Faced is now owned by Estée Lauder (the company bought Too Faced in 2016 at the hefty price of $1.45 billion), which is not a cruelty-free brand.

But, Estée Lauder Claims to be Cruelty-Free

Even though Estée Lauder claims, on its website, that they stopped testing on animals more than 30 years ago, they still sell their products in countries where animal testing is required by the law. This is even mentioned in the company’s animal testing policy, making it self-contradictory. Take a look yourself:

Estée Lauder’s animal testing policy is vague and sketchy. Hence, it can fool many people into believing that the company is actually cruelty-free.

But, just like vegans, those who have been avoiding non-cruelty-free brands for a while know all about such gimmicks.

A company cannot be classified as cruelty-free as long as it’s contributing to animal testing in any way and this includes agreeing to animal testing policies of various countries and permitting others to test their products on animals. Estée Lauder, unfortunately, does this. This is exactly why the company is not certified by any global cruelty-free organization.

Is Too Faced Vegan

Is Too Faced Vegan?

Too Faced is not 100% vegan. Don’t lose heart! Too Faced vegan-friendly product range is quite impressive and most of their cult favorites are vegan-friendly too!

Wondering if you will have to follow the cumbersome procedure of checking the ingredient list of every product to figure out if its vegan or not?

Not with Too Faced! The company has a separate tab on the website for vegan-friendly products. You can check out Too Faced vegan products here.

What Non-Vegan Ingredients Too Faced Cosmetics Have?

The most common ingredients in Too Faced non-vegan products are:

  • Lanolin – An oil extracted from sheep wool
  • Carmine – Red color or pigment extracted by crushing cochineal; a beetle-like insect
  • Beeswax
  • Yogurt

Some other potentially non-vegan ingredients found in Too Faced products include:

  • Stearic acid
  • Glycerin
  • Squalene
  • Shellac
  • Casein
  • Oleic acid
  • Guanine
  • Keratin
  • Elastin
  • Collagen

I labelled these ingredients as potentially non-vegan because they can be taken from both animal and non-animal sources. However, we do not know each element’s exact source unless specified by the company.

The Sum Up – Is Too Faced Cruelty-Free and Vegan?

Too Faced is 100% cruelty-free. However, not all its products are vegan.

Even though its parent company is not cruelty-free, Too Faced has strictly maintained its policy of not testing on animals even after it became a part of the Estée Lauder Companies. They also do not sell in China. Both these factors speak volume about their commitment to the cause.

All in all, Too Faced is an ethical brand that cares for animals and the environment. The company’s founders Jerrod Blandino and Jeremy Johnson have also been considerate of their vegan customers from the very beginning and have provided them a good range of vegan-friendly products to choose from.
