6 Best Vegan Peacoat: Buyer’s Guide For Women And Men (2024)

The peacoat is arguably one of the most iconic coats in existence. They were originally designed and used by the Navy.

Peacoats were thick, heavy, warm, with double-breasted coats and designed to keep sailors warm while they were sailing on the high seas.

Today, peacoats are warm jackets designed to make a fashion statement.

There’s only one problem – traditionally, peacoats are made almost entirely of wool! If you haven’t already, then I encourage you to read my last post on why wool isn’t vegan

Thankfully, due to the ever-growing popularity of veganism, there are plenty of vegan-friendly peacoats on the market. You just have to know what to look for.

So, if you’ve been looking for the best vegan peacoat, then you’ve come to the right place!

Below, I’ll explain exactly what you need to look for in a vegan peacoat and show you some of my favorite vegan peacoats for women and men. It’s time to find you a coat!

How Are Vegan Peacoats Different From Non-Vegan Peacoats?

Where I grew up, we didn’t have harsh winters. It got a bit chilly during the winter, but it never really got cold enough for me and the other girls at school to invest a bunch of money in winter clothes.

So, most of us just doubled up on hoodies and complained about how the cold prevented us from being fashionable.

Then, I moved to New York for college. It stayed colder for a lot longer up here and I knew I didn’t want to spend half of the year in old hoodies. So, I decided that it was time to invest in some good quality winter wear…

I knew I wanted a nice, stylish, warm peacoat. The only problem was that most of the designer peacoats I wanted weren’t vegan-friendly, and were made from wool and/or animal fur.

That’s when I found out that there were some clothing brands that made vegan peacoats out of vegan wool alternatives!

The biggest difference between vegan peacoats and non-vegan peacoats is that vegan peacoats are made from synthetic fibers or sustainably-harvested cotton

After trying on both vegan and non-vegan peacoats, I actually found that the vegan peacoats were not only just as comfortable and soft as their non-vegan alternatives, but they were also warmer. That was all it took to sell me, and I started stocking up on vegan winterwear.

How To Find The Best Vegan Peacoat For Yourself

Whether you’re looking for the best vegan peacoat online or shopping at brick-and-mortar retailers, you don’t want to go into your shopping experience blind. This is especially true when it comes to shopping vegan.

Shopping vegan means you’ll need to look closer at almost everything you buy. From vegan peacoats to vegan winter boots, you’ll need to find out exactly what each article of clothing is made from to ensure that it was ethically made and doesn’t contain any animal by-products.

So, to make your job a little bit easier, I put together a quick cheat sheet detailing what you need to look for while trying to find the perfect vegan peacoat:

What To Look For In A Vegan Peacoat: Why It Matters:
Synthetic vs. Organic TextilesThe majority of vegan peacoats are made with a blend of purely synthetic fibers. The most common synthetic textiles used to make vegan peacoats include polyester, rayon, terylene.  However, some of the more high-quality vegan peacoats will also include cotton. Cotton is an organic, vegan-friendly textile that’s both warm and soft.  While synthetic fibers certainly get the job done, I’ve found that the best vegan peacoats use a blend of synthetic and cotton fibers to create an incredibly warm, soft jacket.
Water ResistanceDepending on where you live, you may or may not need a water-resistant peacoat.  For example, if you live in Texas or Arizona where rain and snow are sparse, then you probably don’t need anything that’s water-resistant.  However, if you live in a region that typically receives heavy rain, snow, and sleet during the cold months, then a water-resistant peacoat is a must!  If you’re looking for a water-resistant peacoat, then you’ll want to look for a jacket that’s made from mostly synthetic materials, as they’re more water-resistant than organic textiles like cotton.
Button QualityPeacoats don’t typically feature any zippers. Instead, they’re closed and held together primarily by a few large buttons. Since they hold the entire coat together, it’s important that they’re sturdily made and won’t pop out.  If you’re shopping online, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of the buttons. However, if you’re shopping in person, then I encourage you to check the overall quality of the buttons before you make your purchase.  Sure, you can always sew your buttons back in with a sewing kit, but this can take some time. So, it’s better to avoid it if you can.
Usable PocketsI’m not sure why, but it’s common practice among low-quality clothing manufacturers to make unusable pockets.  On the outside, it looks like the jacket has a pocket, but in reality, it’s completely useless and sewn shut.  Personally, I like being able to use my pockets to keep my stuff safe.  If you’re looking for the best vegan peacoat, do yourself a favor and buy something with real pockets.
SizingIf you’re shopping online, you’ll find a lot of Chinese manufacturers selling high-quality vegan peacoats. The only problem is that Chinese sizing is often very different from American/European sizing.  Before adding that lovely peacoat to your Amazon cart, always double-check the sizing chart and take your measurements to ensure that the size will fit you.  For instance, a size Extra-Large from a Chinese manufacturer may fit like a size Medium from an American/European manufacturer.

The Best Vegan Peacoats For Women 2022

Alright, so now that you have a better idea of what to look for while shopping vegan, it’s time to show you the best vegan peacoats for women of 2022! Whether you’re just looking for something to keep you warm or you’re trying to make a fashion statement, I guarantee you’ll love at least one of these…

Style Rating: 5/5

If you’re looking for something light and stylish that’s guaranteed to impress, then you can’t go wrong with Allegra K’s Women’s Notched-Lapel Vegan Peacoat.

Allegra K makes some seriously high-quality vegan outerwear and this is one of my favorite peacoats to wear in the fall and spring when it’s not too cold out.

Although it looks like it’s made from real wool, this thin peacoat is made from 100% polyester. The threads are distressed a bit to give them that fuzzy wool look.

Despite how thin the jacket is, though, it’s also remarkably warm and perfect for those cool 45 to 55-degree nights when you just want something stylish to throw over your outfit.

It fits true to size, so you don’t have to do any extra measuring or try to figure out if it runs small. Allegra K offers twelve different shades that range from brighter colors like green, hot pink, and baby blue to neutral shades like black, brown, and navy blue.

This means there’s a vegan peacoat to match pretty much any outfit you can think of!

What I Like About It:

  • It’s made from 100% vegan polyester.
  • It’s available in twelve different colors and shades.
  • It fits true to size.
  • It’s a lightweight peacoat that’s perfect for fall and spring weather.

What’s Not-So-Great About It:

  • It’s not water-resistant enough to handle rain or snow.
  • It’s lightweight, so it won’t keep you warm in severe winter weather.

Style Rating: 4/5

If you’re looking for a more traditional style, then Wantdo’s Women’s Double-Breasted Vegan Peacoat is a warm, cozy, and stylish alternative to traditional wool peacoats.

It’s made from 100% terylene, one of the latest vegan wool alternatives. Not only is it super-soft, but it will keep you just as warm as real wool!

This is easily the warmest peacoat in my wardrobe. Its double-breasted design provides extra shielding against strong winds coming from the front, and the tight stitching of the terylene ensures that nothing gets through this jacket. It also has thick hand-warming pockets which I make full use of.

As far as the more stylish elements go, I really like the detachable waist belt, the large pretty buttons, and the wrist cuffs are a great touch.

The wrist cuffs aren’t just for show either; they’re functional and allow you to tighten the peacoat around your wrists to ensure the wind doesn’t start blowing up your sleeve.

Wantdo’s peacoats fit true to size and this style is available in eleven different colors and patterns, including:

  • Caramel
  • Dark gray
  • Light gray
  • Gray plaid
  • Khaki
  • Navy
  • Traditional gray plaid
  • Red
  • Black
  • Wine
  • Yellow plaid

What I Like About It:

  • It’s super-warm thanks to its thick outer shell and double-breasted design.
  • Features large, high-quality buttons.
  • Features functional hand-warming pockets.
  • Features a detachable waist belt.
  • Features wrist cuffs that can be tightened to prevent wind from entering.

What’s Not-So-Great About It:

  • It may be a bit too warm to wear in the warmer spring and fall months.
  • It’s not water-resistant.

Style Rating: 5/5

I know you’re probably thinking, “Isn’t this the same exact peacoat you just mentioned?”

While it’s made by the same company (Wantdo) and features a very similar design, there’s one small, very important difference – this vegan peacoat is 100% waterproof!

Even though it’s made from the same exact high-quality synthetic terylene material, the textile features tighter stitching, which ensures that water molecules cannot pass through.

You could be standing in the middle of a heavy rainstorm and all of the rain would simply bounce or fall off of this coat. This makes it perfect if you live in an area that gets heavy rain or snowfall.

Other than that, Wantdo’s Waterproof Vegan Peacoat is almost identical to the previous Wantdo vegan peacoat I mentioned.

It has the same wrist cuffs and detachable waist belt that allow you to adjust the fit, a warm and soft interior lining, and is available in ten colors ranging from bright red and blue to navy blue and black.

What I Like About It:

  • It’s made from 100% waterproof material.
  • It features a soft interior liner.
  • You can adjust the fit with the waist belt.
  • Stylish and available in ten different colors.

What’s Not-So-Great About It:

  • It doesn’t have that traditional “wool” appearance since it’s designed to be waterproof.

Style Rating: 4/5

Sebby Collection’s Vegan Peacoat is an affordable, high-quality, weatherproof peacoat. It’s made from 100% polyester and is both water and wind-resistant, making it perfect for a stormy day.

Unlike most peacoats that must be hand-washed or dry-cleaned, this vegan peacoat is machine washable, meaning that you can throw it in the wash with the rest of your clothes!

The feature that I love the most about Sebby Collection’s vegan peacoat is the detachable hood. That’s right, it features a warm, waterproof hood that you can easily zip on and off from the neck lapel. This is a great feature for those of you who don’t want to carry around a bulky umbrella.

The only downside of this coat is that the inner lining isn’t all that soft. It’s designed to be worn as an overcoat and features a more rigid, utilitarian inner lining.

I usually wear it on top of a light jacket or long-sleeved shirt during the cool fall and spring months when it’s rainy and nasty outside.

Like the previous two vegan peacoats I’ve shown you, Sebby Collection’s coat does have an adjustable waist belt that allows you to make the fit as loose or snug as you want. It’s available in seven different colors, including graphite, stone, navy, black, burgundy, blush (light pink), and olive.

What I Like About It:

  • It features a detachable hood that makes it perfect for bad weather.
  • It comes with an adjustable waist belt for the perfect fit.
  • It’s made from 100% water-resistant polyester.
  • It’s machine washable.

What’s Not-So-Great About It:

  • The inner lining isn’t very soft.

The Best Vegan Peacoats For Men 2022

The men’s peacoat was popular long before they ever made peacoats for women. So, if you’re looking for a stylish jacket to handle the cool weather, here are the best vegan peacoats for men

While you’re at it, you may enjoy this gentleman’s history of the peacoat:

Style Rating: 4/5

London Fog is an iconic brand that’s designed to handle the cool, rainy weather that the city of London is best known for. No matter where you are in the world, though, London Fog’s Men’s Vegan Peacoat will keep you cool and dry.

It’s made from a blend of nylon and polyester, making it water-resistant (although not 100% waterproof).

This peacoat is designed in trench coat fashion and will reach down to the knee level of most men. While it makes for a bulkier coat, it does provide added warmth and protection from the rain, so your brand-new vegan leather belt doesn’t get ruined!

Another feature that some may appreciate is the built-in “gun pocket.” Back in the day, this is where men would carry their revolvers, but it makes just as good of a pocket for keeping your wallet or papers dry as well.

What I Like About It:

  • It’s water-resistant.
  • It’s a trench coat design that reaches knee level and provides added protection from the elements.
  • It features an adjustable waist belt.
  • Large waterproof “gun pocket” inside of the jacket for keeping your valuables dry.

What’s Not-So-Great About It:

  • It’s not 100% waterproof.

Style Rating: 5/5

Bbalizko’s Men’s Classic Vegan Peacoat is easily one of the most stylish and functional men’s peacoats I’ve ever seen. It’s designed in the fashion of the original Navy-issue peacoats and made from a blend of high-quality cotton and polyester.

The quality of the stitching is immaculate, given the affordable price! Usually, this quality of stitching would require you to spend $200 to $300 on a jacket, but this peacoat is available for almost a quarter of that.

Its double-breasted design features six extra-large buttons that allow you to close the jacket snugly, preventing any wind from getting through. While it’s not 100% waterproof, it is water-resistant and able to withstand light rain and snow.

This peacoat is also incredibly warm and features an ultra-soft inner lining.

Why do I know so much about it? Well, I recently purchased it for my boyfriend this past Christmas and he loves it!

What I Like About It:

  • It’s very warm and features an ultra-soft interior lining.
  • It’s water-resistant.
  • Looks very stylish and is made in the style of classic Navy-issue peacoats.
  • Very high-quality buttons.
  • Made from a blend of natural cotton and polyester for superior comfort.

What’s Not-So-Great About It:

  • It’s not 100% waterproof.

Conclusion – Where Can I Buy The Best Vegan Peacoat?

Trying to find vegan clothing can be difficult if you’re shopping in traditional retail stores. Unfortunately, most peacoats aren’t vegan-friendly and are made with wool. If you’re looking for the best vegan peacoat, then Amazon is your best bet.

Not only will you be able to read detailed reviews, but you’ll also be able to compare coats side-by-side to ensure that you’re getting the best deal.

Almost all peacoats feature a special built-in pocket designed to hold your wallet and other valuables. So, if you’re looking for a high-quality vegan wallet, then I encourage you to check out my post on vegan wallets next
